Webwatch 2007-09: Roll up your sleeves

Webwatch is a column published in the Covenant Companion Magazine every month. It is written by Heidi Griepp, manager of Covenant Internet Services and an avid web wanderer. This month webwatch "Puts Faith to Work."

As Covenanters, we believe in the priesthood of all believers—that wherever we go and whatever we do, each of us is a minister. Each of us has a mission and a ministry. God can work through accountants, nurses, teachers, and computer programmers as well as pastors. This month’s websites focus on faith in the workplace and offer resources to help us live out our calling in our working lives.

Special thanks to Mark Washington, coordinator of Intervarsity’s MBA ministry at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and the Graduate School of Business at the University of Chicago. Mark, a member of Grace Covenant Church in Chicago, recommended several of these websites.

thehighcalling.org
Description: This site seeks “to connect people with the faith that undergirds and sustains all that we do.” That faith allows us to see daily work as “a high calling.” Thehighcalling.org
helps lay people serve wherever God has placed them. Main topics include: work, gifts and talents, leadership, excellence, integrity, attitude, professional relationships, and serv-ice. This website also includes features like daily reflections as well as interviews with believers living out their faith in the workplace, and much more.

One current interview was with Bonnie Pruett Wurzbacher, a senior vice-president at Coca-Cola. In an article on faith at work, also posted on the site, she wrote, “We all need meaning in our work. We need a sense that we are contributing to something larger than ourselves—and as Christians, that we are serving to advance God’s purposes in the world. When we recognize that God calls us to bring meaning to our work and we use our gifts and talents to serve his purposes and bring glory to him, we can gain great fulfillment in our daily work.”

Priority Associates
(These next three sites are from Priority Associates, an organization for business people interested in faith. Both my brother and cousin are involved with this group and have raved about it.)

www.ipriority.com
Description: This site is focused on “developing leaders from the inside out,” and is a great way to talk about faith with business professionals. It’s approachable and focuses on things like mentoring and exploring the true meaning of success. Areas of the website include: quick reads, inner views, power quotes, professional forums, toolbox, and more. My favorite area of this site is the weekly mentoring email service.

www.priorityassociates.org
Description: Priority Associates is a resource for young professionals, providing opportunities for them to explore issues of success, personal leadership, and significance. This organization encourages people within the marketplace to do more than bring home a paycheck—to also be men and women of integrity who are spiritually fulfilled.

www.priorityleader.com
Description: This site is focused on leadership and training for Christians in the workplace. One of the great tools worth checking out in this site is the mission statement builder.

www.ivmdl.org
Description: A website from Intervarsity Fellowship, an evangelical campus mission. This website, focused on everyday ministry,  reminds Christians that ministry is a calling and privilege for every believer. Features include: audio interviews from marketplace voices, Bible studies, and reflections about living out faith in daily life. There are also links to other sites, and case studies.

www.icwm.net
Description: The website of the International Coalition of Workplace Ministries, led by Os Hillman. Areas of the site include: events, bookstore, publications, directory, training, and articles. One interesting feature I saw under “pastors and local churches” was a discussion on how to help church members to see their work as ministry. There’s also a huge directory of workplace ministries.

www.ethix.org
Description: A website for the Institute of Business, Technology, and Ethics (IBTE). IBTE was founded to study the interrelationships of business, technology, and ethics. (One of the founders was Covenanter and former North Park University professor David Gill.) They look at questions like, “How can business be transformed by advanced technology and ethical values?” Their mission is to “promote good business through appropriate technology and sound ethics.” The site also has online content from Ethix magazine and other resources.
