Steps Men Can Take

Steps Men Can Take

What can men do to help end or prevent violence against women and children? Take a look at these abusive behaviors and ask yourself if you or anyone you know treat women or children in those ways. If you answer “yes” to any of the behaviors we hope that you will seek help from your pastor or through any of these suggested links.

Men can teach boys early – and teach them often – that there is no place for violence in a relationship. They can protect, nurture, and empower girls. Show them how to think for themselves and most of all, show them how a good man respects and loves a woman.

Ten ways to end violence

  1. Acknowledge and understand how sexism, male dominance, and male privilege lay the foundation for all forms of violence against women.
  2. Examine and challenge your individual sexism and the role that men play in supporting men who are abusive.
  3. Recognize and stop any collusion with other men and take a stance to end violence against women.
  4. Remember that silence is affirming. When you choose not to speak out against men’s violence, you are supporting it.
  5. Educate and re-educate your sons and other young men about their responsibility in ending men’s violence against women.
  6. Challenge traditional images of manhood that stop men from actively taking a stand to end violence against women.
  7. Accept and own the responsibility that violence against women will not end until men become part of the solution to end it. Men must take an active role against tolerating violence toward women.
  8. Stop supporting the notion that men’s violence against women can end by providing treatment for individual men. Mental illness and lack of anger management options are excuses for men’s behavior. Violence against women is rooted in the historic oppression of women.
  9. Take responsibility for creating appropriate and effective ways to develop systems to educate and hold men accountable.
  10. Create systems of accountability to women in your community. Violence against women will end only when men take direction from those who understand the situation fully.
