As she walked in the door, she knew it was going to be one of those nights. Her mom was at the kitchen table with that familiar look on her face. Her step-dad was late from work again. It was not going to be a good night. They had dinner and she did her homework. Then she and her sister went to bed. She woke a bit later to yelling and screaming. He was home and boy were they mad! She did not understand. If coming home late from work made both of them so mad, why did he not just come home on time? She was so scared.
Her sister grabbed her and held her close telling her that it was going to be alright. Just as she began to calm down a can came flying into the room. There was more yelling. She did not know what to do. She was not just afraid, now she was afraid that her mom was hurt. She heard things hitting the walls and glass breaking.
The next thing she knew, she, her sister, and her brother were in the car. Her mom was starting the car. She turned around to make sure she and her brother were okay in the back seat and he came out screaming. He picked up a potted plant and threw it at the windshield. They could not see out the front window, but somehow it cleared. Then he came running at the car with the end of a rake. She heard glass shatter. He was trying to get in the window. She was not sure why. Why was he so mad? What did we do wrong? She was very scared.
Her mom and sister were struggling in the front seat and she could see blood. She did not know what to do. Finally, the car began to move out of the driveway. But he jumped on the hood. She just wanted him to leave them alone. Though he fell off a few times, he kept jumping back onto the hood. Finally, he fell off for the last time. They drove off into the night.
She woke in the morning in a strange place. Her mom, sister, and brother were there; but strangers were there too. She wondered why her mom did not wake her up for school. She learned that she would be going to a new school in a few days and that we would be living there for awhile. At first she was sad because she would miss her friends. But her mom was happy. She did not understand it, but she knew it was a good thing. The people were nice and she felt happy too. She was not scared anymore.
