Christian Formation Foundations

Christian Formation Foundations

Christian Formation is our continuing journey of being transformed by the Holy Spirit into the likeness of Christ, experiencing and expressing love for God and others.

Life with God happens everywhere. Our relationship with God is not confined to a segment of our life. Christian Formation is about inclusive whole-person, whole-kingdom, whole-life living and learning.

Information alone however, will not support the kind of radical transformation spoken of in God’s Word. Transformation happens when our hearts are open to the leading of the Spirit both individually and in community. It involves focused attention to God’s presence in order to grow spiritually as individuals and a body, and be empowered to extend God’s love and grace in the world.

We believe God has provided significant means that help us be receptive to the transforming power of the Holy Spirit. We have framed these in the acronym GROW.

Illuminated by the Spirit
We are people of the Word, who value scripture as the only perfect rule for our lives. We understand it is the spirit who enables us to meet God, understand, and live out the truths of the Bible. Our hope is not simply to make the scripture come alive, but to make the scripture come alive in us. Scriptures: John 14:26; Psalm 119:105; Psalm 1:1-2, 2Timothy 3:16, Joshua 1:8; Hebrews 4:12

United by the Spirit
We acknowledge the Spirit’s presence and transforming work in every relationship and recognize healthy and effective spiritual growth takes place and among people of varying ethnicities, and backgrounds within peer groups, across generations, we encourage people to be in discipling and mentoring relationships that nurture growth, both in the home and in the wider community. Scriptures: 2 Cornithians 3:18; Psalms 119:63; Deuteronomy 6:4-8; Luke 10:25-37; 1 John 4:7-12; Proverbs27:17

Directed by the Spirit
We believe that discipleship to Jesus implies radical obedience to all of his teachings. Such obedience, together with the Spirit’s work in us, equips us to do kingdom work by extending the compassion mercy and care of Christ to other, giving witness to the good news and acting to reverse injustice. Scriptures: John 16:13; Micah 6:8; Ephesians 2:10; Ephesians 4:11-13: Matthew 22:36-39; Matthew 28:19-20
