Vision and Commitments

Disciples True to God’s Mission

Genesis 12:1-3, Isaiah 6:8, John 3:16, Acts 13:1-3
Mission began with God and belongs to God. The central purpose of God’s mission has always been to reconcile people with God and with one another. All through the Bible, God sent people to participate in this mission of love for the whole world. This mission was fully embodied when God sent Jesus into our world as one of us. As God’s people we are also called to embody the good news wherever we are sent. We do our part with words, deeds, and living witness. Discerning steps of obedience is done as a community on the denominational and local church levels through Bible study, prayer, discussion, planning, and dependence upon the Holy Spirit.

Participants in God’s Sending

Isaiah 49:6, John 10:16, 2 Corinthians 5:18
We are a community called, equipped, and sent by God for global ministries of service which God has prepared for us to do. As such, Covenant World Mission seeks to encourage the whole church to find its appropriate place of participation in God’s mission. We also have been given the specific tasks of discerning, promoting, training, sending, and managing support for those whom God and the Covenant Church have called as missionaries. As followers of Christ, we strive to obey the great commandment and the great commission. We believe that through this joyful obedience both we and the world will be blessed. We seek to encourage the Covenant Church to follow God’s leading in personal and communal witness, service, and advocacy. We work to facilitate the establishment of culturally relevant communities of faith, worship, witness, and ministries of compassion, mercy, and justice around the world.

Companions with God’s People

Psalm 119:63, Galatians 6:10
We are a global community of Christ followers who join together as companions in mission with all who love and fear the Lord. Covenant World Mission recognizes that it takes all of the diverse communities of believers around the world to make up the church, the body of Christ. We also recognize that many of the tasks of mission are too large for any one church or organization to undertake alone. With God’s help, we strive to be partners with those whom God has gifted and brought together for Spirit-led proclamation and the loving demonstration of the whole message of God’s good news to the whole world. This includes shared mission ventures with local church initiatives, para-church organizations, denominational outreach, other specialized ministries, and groups of key leaders.

Partners in God’s Work

2 Corinthians 3:18, Ephesians 4:11-16
We are a community united in the journey of continual and mutual transformation as the world is reconciled to God in Christ Jesus. Covenant World Mission seeks to recognize how God transforms people and societies in diverse contexts and seeks to do our part to cooperate with the Holy Spirit in that journey. We accompany other people and communities on their journey. We serve together, as God directs us, and do not seek to define, direct, or control their processes of change. Rather, we listen together for God’s guidance through the Word, the Spirit, and the community, moving forward in the mutual transformation that God has designed for us.
