Story of Renewal

Donald Code

What drew you to the Covenant?

I serve on the leadership team at Hillcrest Covenant Church. My wife and I came to HCC as a compromise, coming from different faith backgrounds. What started as the middle ground quickly became home. It was also where our son got connected to the youth group, which meant a lot to us.

What keeps me engaged is shared purpose, especially Project Bluer, a partnership with the Hindustani Covenant Church through Covenant World Relief and Development. It’s about loving our neighbors in ways that restore dignity and reflect Christ’s compassion in action.

“People are leaning in, asking deeper questions, wrestling with what it means to trust God with their giving, and discovering that shared purpose across generations is where God is doing something new."

How are you experiencing God’s renewing work in your life?

I’m experiencing God’s renewing work as a steady shift in how I live out my faith. For a long time, it was private and passive—I believed, but I wasn’t engaging consistently. Over time, God has nudged me out of that space, especially in prayer, in Scripture, and in sharing that part of life with my wife.

Project Bluer has made faith feel real. It’s moved me from thinking about faith to living it out. My walk is more active now. I’m more aware of where God is working and more willing to enter in, even outside my comfort zone.

Where do you see the Holy Spirit breathing new life into your ministry?

I’m seeing renewal through a fresh energy around Project Bluer. A big part comes from our relationship with the Hindustani Covenant Church. Over the past ten years—especially since our trip to India in 2019—it’s become very personal. We often say “two HCCs, one heart,” and that captures it. This isn’t something we support from a distance—it’s a shared ministry with people we know and care about.

We’ve brought the youth in more intentionally, connecting them with HCC’s Home of Hope and the Ragpicker ministries. What’s encouraging is seeing people lean in—asking deeper questions, wrestling with what it means to trust God with their giving, and considering how faith connects to real needs. That shared sense of purpose across generations is where I’m seeing God doing something new.

Prior to moving to the USA, I was a professor at the National University of Colombia and served with the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students in Colombia for 16 years. Starting in 2001, I served as InterVarsity National Staff in the USA. I have a master’s degree in Christian Ministries, and I serve in Spiritual Direction to those who want to be fully present and available to God and receive His grace over them. My joy is to see professors and college students coming to know Jesus and being transformed into people that bring the good news of righteousness and justice to others.
