Story of Renewal

Amber & Jim Eaton

Tell us who you are and where you serve.

We are co-pastors of The Well Covenant Church in Colorado Springs. The Well is a small church re-plant of about 40 to 50 people who are passionate about following God’s call to BLESS our neighborhood: Begin with prayer, Listen with care, Eat together, Serve one another, and Share the Story. What keeps us engaged is the Covenant’s willingness to make space for churches like ours—small, scrappy, and deeply committed to loving our neighbors in no-strings-attached ways.

"This really good food is completely free. There's nothing you can do to earn it. Just like God's grace. That's renewal: not a big event, just the love of Jesus shared over a plate of really good food.”

How are you experiencing God’s renewing work in your life?

For us, renewal has come through rediscovering that the gospel doesn’t need a program—it needs presence. One couple in the church shared their passion for BBQ as a way of sharing God’s grace, and that fit perfectly with the “E” in BLESS—Eat Together. God has been teaching us that we don’t have to manufacture ministry. We just have to show up and trust that God will use what we offer. It turns out a lot of people in our church love to smoke meat, and the vision caught on quickly.

Where do you see the Holy Spirit breathing new life into your ministry?

Last summer, we served more than 1,100 people through our community BBQs. Loneliness is a significant issue in our neighborhood, and our BBQs gave people a safe place to be seen, heard, and known. There is no program, sermon, or contact card. We don’t charge anything. When folks ask how they can donate, our response is that they can’t. This really good food is completely free—there’s nothing they can do to earn it. Just like God’s grace.

One of our members, Rebekah, has “Romans 5:8” tattooed on her forearm. A guest asked about the tattoo at the serving window. In the middle of managing orders, Rebekah shared the verse and what it means to her. The guest walked to her table, still contemplating the verse. That’s renewal. Not a big event. Just the love of Jesus, shared over a plate of really good food.

Prior to moving to the USA, I was a professor at the National University of Colombia and served with the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students in Colombia for 16 years. Starting in 2001, I served as InterVarsity National Staff in the USA. I have a master’s degree in Christian Ministries, and I serve in Spiritual Direction to those who want to be fully present and available to God and receive His grace over them. My joy is to see professors and college students coming to know Jesus and being transformed into people that bring the good news of righteousness and justice to others.
