SPRINGFIELD, VA (August 24, 2011) – Community Covenant Church invites people from throughout the Evangelical Covenant Church to send prayers of peace and comfort in remembrance of the tenth anniversary of the September 11 tragedy.
A prayer team from the church will offer the prayers during a ceremony at the Pentagon Memorial that day.
“We feel honored to be able to remember this event and lift up prayers on behalf of those who were affected, but are not able to visit the memorial themselves,” says pastor Devyn Chambers Johnson. “We hope these prayers bring a deep sense of peace and hope to our neighborhoods and nation and advance God’s peace in the world.”
The memorial at the Pentagon opened to the public on September 11, 2008, and consists of 184 benches, each with a plaque bearing the name of a victim killed in the crash of American Airlines Flight 77.
Many of Community Covenant’s members and friends work or have worked at the Pentagon, says Johnson. The church is located about 10 miles from the Pentagon.
In addition to welcoming prayers, the church is inviting local scout troops, neighborhood associations and other churches to participate in the ceremony at the memorial. “We hope we can be a place of common prayer for the community, which was profoundly affected by these events,” says Johnson. “We also hope this can be an outlet for churches around the country to join together in prayer.”
