CHICAGO, IL (June 18, 2012) – Sixteen new community development project proposals have been approved by Covenant World Relief (CWR) with a total of $542,000 dispersed during the current granting cycle.
The 16 projects are being pursued in collaboration with 12 partners in 10 countries, including Thailand, India, East Asia, Burma, India, Haiti, Congo, South Sudan, Kenya, and South Africa.
Covenant World Relief seeks to partner with Covenant and Covenant-related organizations dedicated to caring for the poor, the powerless, and the marginalized.
Areas of focus in the current round of projects include clean water, women’s empowerment, agriculture, education, micro-enterprise development, community health, peacemaking, and advocacy initiatives. Click here to view additional photos.
Women’s empowerment is one of the major areas of focus because women are often powerless and marginalized, says David Husby, CWR director. “When women are empowered, we often see transformation in the whole family and in the wider community.”
There are three granting cycles in any given year. However, CWR is always positioned to quickly respond to major disasters as they occur – often CWR dollars are among the first funds to be deployed.
“CWR has the ability to have a significant impact around the world because of the generosity of Covenant churches and individuals who give so faithfully,” Husby notes.
