Briefs: Storm Aftermath, Violence Concerns

Storm Proves a Blessing for Congregation

GLEN ELLYN, IL (July 12, 2012) – The storm that shoved its way through the Chicago area on July 1, knocking out power and causing structural damage to buildings in its way, proved a blessing to Glen Ellyn Covenant Church because violent wind gusts ripped apart a section of the roof.

Students and adults in the building were cleaning up following a spaghetti dinner to raise funds for CHIC. At some point after the power went out, it was discovered that water was raining into the gym, says administrative assistant Kirsten Rosenquist.

Members quickly responded by covering the stage with plastic tablecloths and placing every possible bucket and cooler at spots on the floor where water was coming in. Repairs began within 48 hours.

Construction started so quickly because the church already had planned to replace the roof and had talked with two contractors. The roof was completed by the end of the week, and the congregation was able to meet for worship on Sunday.

The quick repairs were a reason to give thanks, but there was another cause for celebration. Prior to the storm, the congregation was going to have to pay for the roof. Now insurance is covering the cost.

Special Services in Response to Deadly Violence

CHICAGO, IL (July 11, 2012) – In response to the epidemic of violence in the city, Oakdale Covenant Church will host a series of worship services that are especially designed for youth and young adults, scheduled July 27-29.

Speakers at the services will be David Washington, an Oakdale pastor; Harvey F. Carey, pastor of Citadel of Faith Covenant Church in Detroit, Michigan; and Darryl Scarbrough, minister of youth spiritual life at New Faith Baptist Church International in Chicago.

Musical guests will be the Oakdale Christian Academy Concert Choir, Json, Viktory, and Valonda Vincar.
