MERCER ISLAND, WA (February 23, 2015) — Memorial services for Genevie (Sheppard) Hodgin, widow of Covenant minister Worth Hodgin, will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 1, at Covenant Shores Retirement Community. She died January 15, one week before her eighty-ninth birthday.
Genevie was born January 21, 1926, to Earl Thomas and Sarah Clara Sheppard in Los Angeles, California. She married Worth Hodgin on September 10, 1943, in Pasadena, California.
For more than 50 years, she and Worth shared pastorates of the Evangelical Covenant Church, serving churches in Rocklin, Escalon, and Los Angeles, California; Mount Vernon, Washington; and Phoenix, Arizona. During the couple’s time in Mount Vernon, Genevie graduated from the LPN program at Skagit Valley College.
At First Covenant Church in Los Angeles, the couple helped the congregation transition from a community that served older Swedish immigrants to one that served new immigrants from Mexico and Central America. Genevie founded and was an active participant in the English as a Second Language classes and senior meals programs provided by the church.
She is survived by her children, Bonnie Hansen of King City, Oregon, Anne (Carl Young) Hodgin of Mount Vernon, and Richard (Jeri) Hodgin of Seattle; four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests remembrances to the chaplain’s fund at Covenant Shores.
