Five for Friday: Misogynist Mayweather, Jeremy Lin, and What Was Behind Tinker Creek

CHICAGO, IL (May 1, 2015) — Many Covenanters routinely share links to social media articles and videos with one another that Covenant News Service believes may be of interest to others. Each Friday we post five of them. Following is a sample of those submissions—their inclusion does not represent an endorsement by the Covenant of any views expressed.

No Outrage over Mayweather’s Long History of Hitting Women
What Floyd Mayweather does to women is disgusting. That he is unrepentant is disgusting. But what’s also reprehensible is that the sports media, which condemned Ray Rice and Adrian Peterson, continues to eagerly hype this fight. Where is the outrage over an unrepentant serial abuser? Be sure to check out the Deadspin link included in the story.

Isolation Play
Remember Linsanity, when Jeremy Lin came out of nowhere and captivated people who weren’t even interested in basketball? And remember how Christians celebrated his faith? The attention hasn’t been that pleasant in recent years, including from current teammate Kobe Bryant, whose displeasure with Lin has been vocal. So how is he making it through the hard times and relative obscurity? The writer notes, “He begins to break down John 3:30, written out in purple Sharpie: He must increase, but I must decrease. ‘It reminds me to be less obsessed about myself,’ Lin explains.” That hasn’t been easy.

Five Non-Christian Habits Christians Need to Learn
Not only are they habits we need to learn, they are habits that people need to stop avoiding. Every church should consider how to incorporate this article into the life of their congregation.

Annie Dillard: The Thoreau of the Suburbs
Thursday marked the influential writer’s seventieth birthday. This wonderful article about the story behind her Pulitzer-prize winning book Pilgrim at Tinker Creek gives some background and context. Who knew she was living in the suburbs when she wrote it?

Why Do We Have Allergies?
