NORMAN, OK (May 8, 2015) – JourneyChurch.tv, an ECC church, sustained more damage from Wednesday night’s tornado than originally thought, and the congregation will have to hold its Sunday worship service offsite this week, pastor Clark Mitchell said in an email today.
Mitchell said the building “looks “decent’ from an outside perspective,” and the leaders initially believed they would be able to worship there on Sunday. But during cleanup, it became clear that the damage was greater than first thought.
“The A/C unit tore a few holes in the roof as it rolled off and that allowed water to spill into the building over the worship center platform,” said Stephen Dawson, president of National Covenant Properties.
The church will hold three worship services at the local Embassy Suites and will have to begin setting up at 2 a.m. Sunday. Services will be at 8:30 a.m., 10 a.m., and 11:30 a.m.
“Our senior team is doing a great job coordinating the efforts with all the contractors who will get us back in shape again, hopefully in a quick fashion,” Mitchell said. “The rest of the team is doing a great job focusing their efforts on a community that can’t seem to catch a break. They are simply trying to love on people, serve them where needed, and encourage them to trust in an always faithful God!”
When deadly tornados ripped through the area two years ago this month, JourneyChurch.tv became a major collection center that was used for several months.
After Wednesday’s tornado, one local resident posted on Facebook, “This is an amazing church!! They did so much for us when we lost our home in Moore and had nothing at all!!!”
