CHICAGO (September 17, 2015) — North Park Theological Seminary’s three-day Symposium on the Theological Interpretation of Scripture slated for September 24-26 will be webcast live at CovChurch.tv.
“Race and Racism” is the topic for this year’s event. The symposium begins at 7 p.m. on Thursday and concludes at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
The event follows on the heels of the seminary’s Nils W. Lund Lectures, which will be held September 23-24. Lecturers this year will be professor Bo Lim from Seattle Pacific University and professor Emerson Powery from Messiah College, who will each present two-part lectures on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively. They will also each present papers during the symposium.
The symposium features prominent scholars from around the world and provides a forum for interdisciplinary theology from a biblical perspective for the benefit of the church. Each session includes a paper presentation followed by a short response and open discussion. For a full list of presenters, visit the symposium website.
North Park University provost Michael Emerson said, “Theology is fundamental to understanding ourselves as humans and how our creator conceives of the world. So to understand how we are to relate to the concept called race, we must start with theological understanding. Did God or humans create race? What does God have to say on such a topic? Are we to be color-blind, color-conscious, or something else? If we fail to explore such questions theologically, we will fail to adequately answer those questions.”
Emerson wrote the book Divided by Faith and co-authored People of the Dream: Multiracial Congregations in the United States.
