Alice Mae Joann (White) Wiens, widow of Covenant minister John Wiens, died January 14. She was 82.

Alice was born on April 4, 1939, in Chicago, Illinois, to Charles and Alva White. Alice graduated from North Park Academy as part of the first four-year graduating class from North Park College earning a B.A. She married John Wiens on August 22, 1958.

Alice was an avid learner and reader who became fluent in several languages. In 1974 she co-founded the Hinsdale Covenant Church Preschool, which remains active today. She was a tutor in Spanish during her later days in Hinsdale. She enjoyed music and sang in church choirs and choral groups in every community where she lived. Alice had a curious spirit, a vibrant imagination, and an active faith. She and John served Covenant churches in Chicago (Douglas Park); Worcester, Massachusetts; and Hinsdale, Illinois, and several interim roles in churches from Seattle, Washington, to Maryland and Rockford, Illinois. They resided in Venice, Florida, and Columbus, Ohio, during retirement years.

Alice was preceded in death by their oldest daughter, Sandal Joy, and by her husband, John. Survivors include her daughters Colleen Heintzelman (Tim); Alison Randall (Dave); Laurel Wrobbel (Joel); five grandchildren; her sister, Roberta Carlson (Ron); sisters-in-law, Helen and Esther; and a host of extended family members and friends.

Contributions in her memory may be sent to Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation, Juvenile Diabetes/JDRF, or Mental Health America.

A family memorial service will be held in the spring.

Peace be to her memory.
