Delegates to the Midwest Conference annual meeting last month voted to elect Brian Johnson as their new superintendent. Johnson has been serving as acting superintendent since Tammy Swanson-Draheim stepped down from that role to serve as president of the denomination. Previously he was director of church planting in the Midwest Conference. He has served on the Town and Country Commission, conference ministerial committees, and camp boards, and he has experience in new church development, coaching leaders, and helping congregations live into their mission.

Johnson received a bachelor of arts degree from North Park University and a master of divinity degree from North Park Theological Seminary. He was ordained by the Evangelical Covenant Church in 1988. He served as lead pastor of Clay Center Covenant Church in Kansas for 13 years and planted new Covenant churches in California, Minnesota, and Kansas.

Speaking to delegates he said, “The Holy Spirit is at work, stirring in us a longing for God’s renewing presence and a renewed creation.”

Other highlights from the meeting included the celebration of four ordination candidates and welcoming three new churches to be voted into membership at Gather in June (New Community Covenant Church, Kansas City, Missouri; Trailhead Covenant Church, Longmont, Colorado; Hillside Covenant Church, Denver, Colorado).
