GRANITE BAY, CA (January 8, 2014) — Academy Award winning actress Mira Sorvino debuted her new documentary on human trafficking in Cambodia for the first time in the United States at Bayside Church Saturday night.
Bayside, an Evangelical Covenant Church congregation, partners with Agape International Missions in Cambodia and 3 Strands, two northern California nonprofit anti-trafficking organizations highlighted in the film. The documentary, “Freedom Project: Every Day in Cambodia,” was produced in partnership with CNN International during a trip last June to expose child sex trafficking and the sales of virgins.
Bayside has donated $400,000 to help rescue victims in Cambodia. It also helps fund safe houses and sends teams of people to staff and help rescue girls.
Sorvino has been a long-time activist in bringing awareness to human trafficking. In 2009, the United Nations appointed her an Ambassador of Goodwill to combat the crime. Lincoln Brewster, Christian recording artist and the church’s senior worship pastor, interviewed Sorvino and CNN International producer Lisa Cohen during the event.
Sorvino previously blogged about the trip, writing that early on the film crew approached a group of men who trafficked girls. “A feeling of utter revulsion and ire rises in me,” she wrote. “I finally burst out: ‘It’s not ok to sell children! It’s not ok to sell children to pedophiles.…The world is watching.’ ”
