Five for Friday:  MOD Pizza, Autotext Creator Confesses, Pastor Fantasy Draft

CHICAGO, IL (September 7, 2018) – Covenanters routinely share links to social media articles and videos that Covenant News Service believes may be of interest to others. Each Friday we post five of them. Following is a sample of those submissions—their inclusion does not represent an endorsement by the Covenant of any views expressed.

Why MOD Pizza Loves Hiring Ex-Cons

This rapidly growing company didn’t start out to deliberately hire people who had once been incarcerated. But the owners say that the practice has been one of the keys to the restaurant’s success.

Incidentally, some advocates, such as the Covenant’s director of racial righteousness and reconciliation Dominique Gilliard avoid using such terms as “ex-con.” They recommend “returning citizens” instead.

From the article: “MOD’s hiring practices would come to alter everything about the company. ‘We have no interest in just building another fast-casual pizza business,’ says Ally Svenson, who co-founded the company in 2008 with her husband, Scott. ‘We’re building a business platform to make positive social impacts.'”

Don’t Be Fooled: Weather Is Not Climate

Deniers of climate change often point to an unseasonably cold winter saying it is proof that the world is not getting warmer. But this climate scientist contends that such claims confuse weather with climate. Similarly, she says, we also need to be careful about blaming climate change for everything—it’s not the only cause of natural disasters.

From the article: “Weather is your mood, climate is your personality.”

He’s to Blame—and Thank—for iPhone’s Autocorrect

Casey Chin confesses to developing autocorrect but he’s not repentant—despite being one of its victims.

From the article: “I look forward to the next breakthrough in voice recognition technology or AI that will improve the way we type and communicate. Until that happens, the autocorrecting keyboard remains the best smartphone text entry solution we have, lobe it or gate it.”

Celebrity Fantasy Draft

The son of megachurch pastor Andy Stanley appears in this comical sendup in a fantasy draft of celebrity pastors. The first person picked is “the Tom Brady” of pastors.  Andy wasn’t offended that his son appeared in the video and even linked to it. He posted on Twitter:

“Yes, that’s really my son.

No, I’m not offended.

Yes, (comedian) John (Crist) is a friend.

No, not all preacher’s kids are comedians…but they could be.”

Nurse Discovers She Delivered Physician Colleague

It’s a nice heart-warming story. Who doesn’t need one of those these days?

From the article: “After nearly three decades and caring for countless babies, Wong was still able to remember one preemie when a chance encounter brought them together—but this time, he was taller than she was and wearing a pair of blue scrubs.”
