News Brief: Covenanters Making Headlines

Gospel Mission Honors Kent Covenant Church for Generosity

KENT, WA (December 31, 2010) – Seattle’s Union Gospel Mission recently honored Kent Covenant Church with its Highest Giver Award for 2010.

The church was recognized for giving more than $9,000 to purchase blankets for the homeless as part of its Advent Conspiracy emphasis and for donating more than 10,000 diapers to the mission’s Hope Place, a women’s shelter. Kent Covenant’s student ministries spearheaded the diaper drive.

The church also provides financial support and volunteers for an outreach program of the mission at the South King County Regional Justice Center (prison) located in Kent. The mission commended the church “for serving those in greatest need on the coldest, wettest nights.”

Covenanters Bring Ministry for Helping Abused to Mexico

LA PAZ, MEXICO (December 31, 2010) – Evangelical Covenant Church ministers traveled to Mexico to help establish the first Mending the Soul (MTS) ministries in the country for helping victims of domestic violence.

Helping lead the presentations were Pastor Kent Bertrand and his wife, Blanca, of The Bridge Covenant Church in Gilbert, Arizona, as well as Tammy Smith, pastor of spiritual formation at Paradise Valley Community Church, a Covenant congregation in Phoenix, Arizona.

MTS is an educational and equipping ministry that provides research based curriculum and resources to train the faith community on the nature and effects of abuse and to partner with other agencies to prevent and respond to abuse, says Smith.
