U.S. News Rankings Recognize Swedish Covenant Hospital

CHICAGO, IL (July 28, 2011) – Swedish Covenant Hospital has received national recognition in the just-released U.S. News & World Report hospital rankings for 2011-2012.

In the category of “Best Hospitals” in the Chicago metropolitan area, Swedish Covenant Hospital (SCH) is ranked number 17 out of 121 hospitals.

The hospital also is nationally recognized as “high-performing” in five specialties – cancer, neurology and neurosurgery, pulmonology, geriatrics, and in ear, nose and throat. The rankings are based on data including death rates, patient safety, the volume of procedures, and on physician survey responses regarding their hospital of choice for each specialty.

“These public measures are meant to help guide patients who need a high level of care,” says Mark Newton, SCH president and CEO. “The hospital’s recognitions for clinical and technological expertise also further advance our standings as a leading hospital in Chicago.”

In its national listing of “Top Doctors,” U.S. News & World Report includes 18 SCH physicians representing 16 specialties, based on a peer nomination process. “Physician referrals are a primary way patients determine which specialist they will see, so peer nominations among physicians are an important indicator of which physicians are trusted and referred to by their colleagues,” Newton adds.

Two SCH physicians received “Top Doctor” badges for being rated in the top one percent in the nation in their respective specialties – cardiology and gastroenterology.

“Our high-performance rankings on the ‘Best Hospitals’ list combined with our achievement for advanced electronic medical record adoption has placed SCH among the nation’s 118 ‘Most Connected Hospitals,’ ” Newton notes. “Only two other hospitals in Chicago made this list.”

In a note of appreciation to departments and physicians, Newton said, “You truly embody SCH’s mission to provide first-rate medical care in a compassionate environment.”

Swedish Covenant Hospital is operated by Covenant Ministries of Benevolence on behalf of the Evangelical Covenant Church.
