News Briefs: CPE Scholarships, Centennial Celebration

Covenant Chaplains Award CPE Scholarships

CHICAGO, IL (July 21, 2014) — The Covenant Chaplains Association awarded three North Park Theological Seminary students with scholarships to help them during the clinical pastoral education (CPE) segment of their education.

Students receiving the scholarships were Michael Bingeman, a member of Resurrection Covenant Church in Chicago; Sumit Sen, pastor of Bay Evangelical Covenant Church in Green Bay, Wisconsin; and Rob Sabin, member of Lakehills Covenant Church in El Dorado Hills, California.

During their CPE training, students are supervised as they work in a clinical setting or ministry that provides services to a population in crisis. Most CPE centers are based in hospital settings, though there are alternate settings such as urban ministries, hospice, and senior care centers.

“Previously, CCA only awarded $400 per year to one student, or some years split it between two students,” said U.S. Navy Commander Jeff Saville, chair of the association. “This year, we have more than doubled the total scholarship amount, and are dividing it among three students at $300 per person.

Saville added, “Although the individual scholarships are not huge amounts, it is the community of chaplains’ way of saying we want to encourage the numerical increase of chaplains working in various contexts as well as the professionalization of their skills within the high calling of chaplaincy.”

Faith Covenant Celebrates Centennial with Tour of Past Sites

FARMINGTON HILLS, MI (July 21, 2014) — Members of Faith Covenant Church recently continued celebrating the church’s centennial anniversary by touring three sites where the congregation used to meet.

All three remain houses of worship:

  • The Open Door Gospel Tabernacle, where the Covenanters met until 1942
  • Dexter Ave Baptist Church (1943-1958)
  • Saint Mark Baptist Church, where they met between 1958 and 1978

“It was a great day tracing our history and our pilgrim journey over our first 100 years as a church,” said associate pastor Dennis Carlson. Faith Covenant worshiped with Dexter Avenue Baptist Church and then shared a meal together.

The church will hold its centennial banquet on October 18. President Gary Walter will speak.
