OAXACA, MEXICO (November 15, 2017) – The Covenant Church of Mexico is asking for volunteer teams from the United States and Canada to help with recovery efforts in Morelos and Oaxaca, which still are suffering from the effects of a series of earthquakes that shook the country in September.
More than 400 people were killed in the quakes and more than 100,000 homes were damaged.
The Mexican Covenant Church already is heavily involved in rebuilding projects but their congregations are small. The congregations are concentrating on helping the neediest families.
Local churches will contribute at least five members to join each construction team. A member of the affected community or family also will participate. Local churches will house and care for volunteers.
Teams should plan to stay seven to 10 days. Volunteers are asked to donate toward food, ground transportation, construction materials, and the hiring of local construction workers to assist in the projects. Suggested donations are $200 to $250 per person per week.
Teams should be no larger than 12 participants, and at least 25 percent of each team should have knowledge in construction, carpentry, electricity, and/or emotional recovery support.
Trips are being coordinated through Merge, a ministry of Serve Globally.
