Write for The Covenant Home Altar

Before You Write

A few notes to help you serve your readers well:

Ground Reflection in Lived Experience

Home Altar meditations are reflective, but the strongest pieces anchor reflection in something concrete — a moment, encounter, memory, image, or lived tension.

Rather than beginning with a general idea, consider starting with:

  • A brief scene
  • A specific moment
  • An observed detail
  • A lived experience

Even a few lines of narrative grounding can help readers connect more deeply with the meditation.

Focus on One Clear Thought

Because space is limited, center each meditation on a single idea rather than multiple themes or reflections.

A strong meditation often moves simply: moment → meaning → prayer

Use Concrete Language

Whenever possible, favor specificity over generalization.

Instead of: “Life can feel overwhelming and uncertain.”

Prefer: “The waiting room was quiet except for the hum of fluorescent lights.”

Specific language helps readers enter the meditation more fully.

Write for Daily Life

Home Altar is a devotional guide. Reflections should feel grounded, human, and spiritually attentive rather than academic or instructional.

Write for a Broad Readership

Our audience includes readers from varied theological, cultural, and life contexts. Clarity and accessibility are essential.

Keep the Tone Pastoral & Reflective

We encourage writing that is thoughtful, prayerful, and invitational. Because Home Altar serves a wide audience, we ask writers to avoid unnecessarily polarizing or argumentative material.

Scripture & Sources

You may use any Scripture translation. We commonly use the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV).

If quoting Scripture or other sources:

  • Please indicate the translation or source
  • Provide proper attribution when applicable

What to Avoid

To serve our readers well, please avoid:

  • Donation appeals in the body of the meditation (if appropriate, we can include a link at the end)
  • Ministry newsletter / report-style writing
  • Unexplained jargon or assumed knowledge
  • Abstract reflections without grounding examples

Author Bio & Photo

Please include:

Author Bio

An up to 100-word first-person biographical statement including:

  • Your name as you wish to be identified
  • Where you live (city and state/province)
  • Covenant church affiliation
  • Relevant vocational or personal details
Photo
  • Recent headshot
  • High-resolution image (jpeg preferred)

Style Guidelines

Home Altar follows the Chicago Manual of Style for capitalization, punctuation, and general usage.

AI Use

We value reflections that emerge from lived faith, prayer, and experience.

  • Submissions must be the author’s original work.
  • We do not accept meditations generated primarily using AI tools.
  • Limited AI use for support (such as brainstorming, outlining, or grammar assistance) is acceptable, but the voice and reflection must be distinctly your own.
  • Please disclose substantial AI use when submitting.

Send your completed submission to: editors@covchurch.org

Please include your mailing address.

Prior to moving to the USA, I was a professor at the National University of Colombia and served with the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students in Colombia for 16 years. Starting in 2001, I served as InterVarsity National Staff in the USA. I have a master’s degree in Christian Ministries, and I serve in Spiritual Direction to those who want to be fully present and available to God and receive His grace over them. My joy is to see professors and college students coming to know Jesus and being transformed into people that bring the good news of righteousness and justice to others.
