The Journey
Discipleship and Confirmation
The Journey
A Path to Deepening Faith
The Journey is designed to cultivate a deep and abiding relationship with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, inviting participants to embark on or intentionally continue a lifelong journey as disciples of Christ. Through this program, we aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of the Bible and church beliefs, while encouraging all participants to strengthen their commitment to follow Christ.
Faith and Relationships
The Journey serves as a valuable resource for youth and adult discipleship and confirmation. Its primary goal is to nurture a meaningful relationship with God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—by guiding participants on a lifelong path of discipleship.
The Journey’s focus is twofold:
- Learning the Faith: Participants are introduced to the core truths of the Christian faith through biblical stories and the ongoing work of the church.
- Building Relationships: Alongside this learning, participants are encouraged to develop mentoring relationships with pastors, mentors, and parents. The emphasis is not just on understanding biblical teachings, but on experiencing communion with God through his Word and these relationships.
The program’s ultimate aim is to help participants grow in their relationship with Christ and articulate their faith, translating biblical truths into everyday living that reflects God’s will in the world.
Discipleship and confirmation
Discipleship and confirmation are key milestones in the spiritual development of adolescents. Some Covenant churches utilize The Journey as part of their youth ministry for discipleship, while others integrate it into their confirmation programs. The Journey offers an overview of the Bible and church beliefs, creating space for participants to either affirm or make a renewed personal commitment to following Christ.
For those baptized as infants, The Journey provides an opportunity to revisit the vows made on their behalf by their parents at baptism, allowing them to take personal responsibility for their faith through confirmation. As described in the Covenant Book of Worship, “Confirmation in the Covenant Church is designed to be a systematic exploration of God’s word, the history of our faith, and the importance of living a Christian life.”
For others, The Journey serves as preparation for baptism or as a grounding in the foundational elements of the Christian faith following baptism. Regardless of how the curriculum is used, it provides both an education in biblical truth and a personal encounter with Jesus’ call to a deeper relationship and growth in faith.
Curriculum
Introduction Brochure
The introduction brochure is designed to introduce The Journey to those who have not used it before. In addition to describing each of the curriculum resources in depth, it also contains additional useful tips for using the curriculum successfully.
Mentor Guide
A spiritual mentor is a vital element in the spiritual growth of youth. Mentors encourage youth in their relationship with Christ. Parents and other interested Christian adults can serve effectively as mentors.
Leaders Guide
A loose-leaf notebook provides the teaching plan for each session in The Journey. Careful attention is given to including ideas that are appropriate for a variety of learning styles in each session plan. The session plans are designed for a 60-minute time frame, with options available to expand the time to 90 minutes. Also included are suggestions for adapting the plans for both large and small class sizes.
Student Journal
The Student Journal is an essential companion to The Journey curriculum, designed to help participants engage more deeply with their discipleship journey. This journal provides a structured space for students to reflect on their learning, document their spiritual growth, and explore their personal faith journey.
