2004 Encouraging Board Representation for Young Leaders

Presented by the Young Pietists, adopted by the delegates to the 119th Covenant Annual Meeting.

WHEREAS 1 Timothy 4:12 claims that the young are not to be despised for their youth, but are told to set other believers an example in speech and conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.

WHEREAS the emerging generation is largely lacking in the current church population, and the emerging voice must be heard to sustain the future of the Church,

WHEREAS the Evangelical Covenant Church has already voiced and begun to embody it’s commitment to developing emerging leaders throughout our church by emphasizing this issue at Midwinter, engaging in the conversation at the seminary level, and making it one of the seven distinctives of our church mission,

WHEREAS, the ethnic commission is setting an example within the church in its commitment to nominate young people on their commission,

We RESOLVE that the Evangelical Covenant Church, through the Nomination Board and the regional conferences, solicit representation of young people and nominate at least one person under 35 to serve on denominational boards as skills and background qualify them for board service. In the event that a young leader reaches age 35 during his/her term, we RESOLVE that if so desired, he/she continue serving out the length of the term.
