Local Church Archives and Oral History Guides

Use these guides to develop and enhance your church’s archives. Produced by the Commission on Covenant History.

Each church has a unique story to tell that informs it ministry today and going forward. A Guide to Archives for Local Covenant Churches is a resource to help congregations gather and preserve their stories. It is designed for all churches—from those that have no policy for saving records to those that have a long-established archives program. It includes information on selecting, arranging, processing, preserving, and storing materials of various types, from print to digital.

An important source of congregational history is found among those who lived it. A Guide to Collecting Oral History for Local Covenant Churches helps congregations collect the stories of their members through interviews. It gives direction on how to conduct an interview—how to establish rapport and what kind of questions to ask—as well as what equipment to use, how to transcribe and save the interview, and what kind of release forms an interviewer should prepare.
