Nelson Recovering Nicely Following Transplant

CHICAGO, IL (March 7, 2011) – Less than three weeks after receiving a kidney transplant, avoiding work is one of the most difficult aspects of Jerome Nelson’s recovery, says the superintendent of the Central Conference of the Evangelical Covenant Church.

“I’m not even checking my email,” says Nelson, laughing. “It’s a great temptation, but I’m trying to honor what the doctor tells me.”

The self-described workaholic has been getting a lot of help from the conference staff, he says. “They won’t talk to me.”

Such disciplined behavior is made more difficult because of the conference’s 125th Annual Meeting scheduled for April 29-30. Nelson plans to attend the gathering, which will be at North Park Covenant Church in Chicago.

Doctors have told Nelson he needs to stay away from doing any work for at least six weeks following the surgery. His recovery remains on schedule.

“I’m doing really well,” Nelson says. “Everything is working as it should. I’m getting stronger every day.”

Nelson wasn’t sure until a week before his surgery whether he would qualify for the transplant. He was cleared for the operation, and a donor became available.

Nelson says he is grateful for all of the prayers from Covenanters around the world.
