Covenanter Tornquist Honored for Service to Mason City
MASON CITY, IA (June 17, 2013) — Mason City Councilman Scott Tornquist, who attends First Covenant Church, was honored with the Mason City Noon Rotary City Service Above Self Award.
Mayor Eric Bookmeyer presented the award to Tornquist recently.
He has served six years on the Mason City Cable Commission and the Economic Development Commission board; three years on the Mason City Planning and Zoning Commission, two of which were as chairman, and two years on the Enterprise Zone Commission. Tornquist was elected to the City Council in 2005 and re-elected in 2009. In that time, he has never missed a meeting.
He also has served the city in non-governmental roles. He was president of Opportunity Mason City and a founding member of the Cerro Gordo County Free Health Care Clinic, which has served 2,800 patient visits to date.
Tornquist also was the founding board member and president of Architecture Construction Engineering (ACE), a high school mentoring program. He served five years as an officer in Youth for Christ.
As a member of First Covenant Church, he has served as a Sunday school teacher, served on many committees, and as chairman of the pastoral search committee.
“Living” Iwo Jima Statue Part of Patriotic Service
ROLLING HILLS ESTATES (June 17, 2013) – A re-creation of the Iwo Jima Memorial sculpture using live models will be part of Rolling Hills Covenant Church’s special musical presentation, “Indivisible: One Nation Under God.”
The presentation will be given at 6 p.m. on Sunday, June 30.
The service will honor all American military personnel and public servants, including members of law enforcement, firefighters, and medical workers. In an effort to honor as many uniformed personnel as possible, all public servants and military officers living in the South Bay of Los Angeles are invited to attend in uniform to be recognized during the service. A Marine Corps Color Guard from Camp Pendleton will present the colors during the service and serve as greeters.
The evening will include the church’s choir and orchestra leading the audience in patriotic songs.

Church Renovating Salvation Army Playground
LAFAYETTE, IN (June 17, 2013) – Riverside Covenant Church is giving children in the community an opportunity to enjoy a local playground that had fallen into disrepair.
The Salvation Army playground was in need of renovation. “Our friends over at Riverside Covenant Church asked how they can help in this community,” said Major Jim Irvine. “They asked how they can help families in need. They’ve taken on the ownership of rebuilding and revitalizing this playground.”
The renovations, which include new fencing, have amounted to more than $3,000.
