MINNEAPOLIS, MN (February 24, 2014) — The earth shook and the walls came crashing down before the worship service at First Covenant Church yesterday.

The walls, however, were those of the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome, located directly across the street.

About 25 people, mostly church staff and musicians who were getting ready for an 8 a.m. music rehearsal, watched the demolition. “We were about 300 feet away, and it was an exciting experience for everyone,” pastor Dan Collison said. “First Covenant rocks! Literally!” he declared.

The entire process was choreographed to the minute. Workers began closing off the streets at 2 a.m. The blast occurred at exactly 7:30 a.m. Collison said.

He captured the event on video, and within 12 hours, more than 58,000 people had watched it. More than 90,000 had seen it by 8:30 this morning.

A new NFL stadium will be built on the same site and is projected to cost more than $1 billion.
