FEMA Honors Church for Its Disaster Plan

CHICAGO, IL (February 10, 2017) – Oakdale Covenant Church has received an “honorable mention” in the Preparing the Whole Community category of the 2016 Individual and Community Preparedness Awards, which is presented by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The church formed a disaster preparedness ministry several years ago under the direction of member Sharon Davis. It has worked with community and government leaders to put together procedures for addressing various emergencies. The congregation will soon finalize its full plan.

FEMA regional coordinator Andrew Velasquez III, wrote to the church saying, “Your leadership and dedication to raising awareness about local disasters and emergencies among Chicago’s vulnerable populations has proven instrumental in strengthening community resilience and increasing community preparedness.”
