Tornadoes, Flooding Threaten Texas Covenanters

Flooding encroaches on Ed and Alice Lee’s house (red brick on right)

HOUSTON, TX (August 27, 2017) – A young couple that attends Access Covenant Church had to be rescued by kayak Sunday afternoon when water rose to knee level in their house, said pastor Ted Law. The woman also is pregnant.

It has been but one story of Covenanters threatened by Tropical Storm Harvey. A tornado spun off the storm on Saturday night orced members of Mosaic Community Covenant Church to take shelter in their homes in Missouri City, a Houston suburb Saturday night.

At 8:30 p.m., pastor Ed Lee emailed that he and his wife, Alice, were sheltering in an interior closet at their house. The tornado touched down near the home of at least one member, who is fine according to Lee.

Several ECC churches in the Houston area reported that they had canceled worship services for this morning due to Hurricane Harvey: Mosaic, Access Covenant Church, Hope Community Covenant Church, and Woven Covenant Church. Several others were slated to hold services but told members to stay home if they were in areas impacted by flooding.

Greg Postel, a meteorologist for the Weather Channel, said the flooding unfolding in the Houston area “could be the worst flooding disaster in U.S. history.”

Cecilia Williams, executive minister of Love Mercy Do Justice for the Covenant, said a decision will most likely be made within the next day to consider specific responses by the denomination.
