WENHAM, MA (November 30, 2017) – Stephen and Sharon Cushing, who guide the New England Seafarers Mission (NESM), were honored recently by their alma mater, Gordon College, with the A. J. Gordon Missionary Service Award, which “is given for faithful service with integrity and maintaining a steadfast commitment to sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ.”
Stephen is executive director and senior chaplain, and Sharon is assistant for programs and development for the maritime mission that provides relief for hardworking crew members who come ashore in South Boston.
The ministry operates under the auspices of the East Coast Conference. NESM has been in operation since 1885, and now reaches 25,000 people per year from 159 countries, according to the ministry’s website.
“On any given cruise ship day we’ll see from three to 500 people on the ship,” Sharon said in a video the school made in honor of the couple.
Aaron Harrington, president of the NESM board, said, “The Cushings are incredibly deserving of the missionary service award because every single day they are doing missionary service around the globe while never leaving the port of Boston.”
