DULUTH, MN (May 24, 2018) – Ann Judith (Kulberg) Carlson, one of the last Covenant missionaries to serve in China, died Wednesday, May 9. She was 95.
Ann was born April 10, 1923, to August and Judith Kulberg in Beverly, Massachusetts.
She served as a missionary in China starting in 1947. She taught English at the Szechuan Provincial Educational College. After three Covenant missionaries were killed by bandits in 1949, she was evacuated to Hong Kong, where she taught children at the American school. She returned to the United States in 1951. After leaving the mission field, she taught fourth grade in Duluth, Minnesota.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Rev. Kenneth Swanson; second husband, Arne Carlson; daughters, Gladys Martin and Carolyn Nelson; grandsons, Zachary Foucault and Jonathan Swanson; and brothers, Clarence, Marshall, and Ralph.
Survivors include four daughters, Loretta (Ken) Carlson, Debbie (Tom) Foucault, Carol Swanson, and Lenora (Sam) Grinolds; three sons, Roger (Sue) Swanson, Harold (Marleen) Carlson, and Mark Carlson; 20 grandchildren, 48 great grandchildren, and six great-great grandchildren.
Services were held May 15 at Salem Covenant Church in Duluth, Minnesota. Interment was at Oneota Cemetery.
