MINNEAPOLIS, MN (June 27, 2018) – Construction on a new Upper School campus for Minnehaha Academy will begin sometime in the next two weeks, according to Mark Stromberg, superintendent of the Northwest Conference.
Much of the school was destroyed or heavily damaged due to a gas line explosion that also killed two people on August 2, 2017. The school is owned by the Northwest Conference of the ECC.
The campus will house students in grades six through 12. Previously the campus was only for high school students.
The Middle School students will have their own space as appropriate but also will have access to fine arts, athletics, and certain academic courses, officials said. The buildings built in 1913 and 1922 as well as the STEM lab were torn down.
Officials had considered moving the school to another location or using different options for the former structures, but ultimately decided that building new facilities would be most effective. The new facilities are slated to be completed in 2019.
According to the school’s blog, “The architecture is a modern interpretation of our original brick buildings, connecting the past with the future while reflecting our vision for next-century learning.”
High school students have been attending classes at a temporary campus in Mendota.
