Day 2 Gift Idea: Provide Employment, Affordable Housing

CHICAGO, IL (December 2, 2018) – Throughout the Advent season, Covenant Newswire will highlight daily gift selections from the CovenantCares giving guide. With the free annual catalog, Covenanters can partner with their brothers and sisters around the globe to give gift donations that will help serve communities and advance God’s work in many areas.

Today we are highlighting the Bezalel affordable housing project, which is named for the person Moses appointed to build the ark of the covenant and tabernacle as well as teach artisan skills (Exodus 35:30-35).

Since 2016, the ECC has been acquiring and renovating homes for community families through the ministry of the local Covenant Church. So far, 20 homes have been rehabbed and 20 families now have access to safe and affordable housing in Dolton, Illinois, a south Chicago neighborhood, and the Brightmoor neighborhood of Detroit, Michigan, where 39 percent of the residents live 200 percent below the federal poverty level.

The change in the Dolton community has been so dramatic that local homeowners who had put their houses up for sale pulled them off the market because they had newfound hope for the neighborhood. For more on the project, read “Partners in Community: No Place Like Home.

More than homes are being rehabbed. The projects are teaching employable skills to people from the neighborhood who might otherwise struggle to find work. Your gift of $50 through Covenant Cares will help enable Love Mercy Do Justice to expand the program to transform houses, neighborhoods, and lives.

This and other missional gift-giving options are available right now through CovenantCares Gifts for Mission. Please join us in advancing the mission.
