DAVENPORT, IA (January 2, 2019) — Maxine A. Schermer, widow of Covenant minister George H. Schermer, died Saturday, December 29, 2018. She was 97.
Maxine was born on October 6, 1921 to Ray and Ebba Nelson of Andover, Illinois. She earned an associate’s degree and teaching certificate at Western Illinois State Teachers College and subsequently taught in a one-room school house near Osco, Illinois.
Maxine and George were married November 29, 1941. They served Covenant churches in Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, and Illinois before retiring in Bettendorf, Iowa. While in Chicago Maxine worked as faculty secretary at North Park Theological Seminary.
Survivors include two sons, Douglas (Shirley) of Scottsdale, Arizona, and Timothy (Martha) of Bettendorf; one daughter, Kristine (Bruce) Metcalf of Hilmar, California; eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be sent to First Covenant Church in Moline, Illinois; Bethany for Children and Families in Moline; or Ridgecrest Village Foundation in Davenport.
A celebration of life service was held at 11 a.m. today at First Covenant Church in Moline. A family graveside service will be held at the Clover Chapel Cemetery, in Woodhull, Illinois.
