What are you reading?

I’m currently studying the book of Genesis, and upon recommendation of my dad, Dean, who is the retired treasurer of the Covenant, I’m reading A Random Walk Down Wall Street.

What do you hope pastors and ministry leaders who attend Midwinter will take away from worship?

I hope they will take away hope! You don’t need to look very far to observe brokenness in our world on a local, national, or international level. Pastors and church workers often feel a heavy burden as they seek to serve churches that hold this brokenness. It’s my hope and prayer that as we gather in Jesus’s name we will be challenged and encouraged and be filled with strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow.

What does the Midwinter theme, “Immeasurably More,” mean to you in your life and ministry context?

I’m surrounded by friends and neighbors who are “just getting by.” But our God is not a God of just getting by. In Genesis, it is evident that our God is a God of blessing. Time and time again, God blesses the ancestors of our faith as they seek to do God’s will. It’s my hope and prayer that as we gather together we will experience a blessing that is immeasurably more than all that we could hope or imagine.

What would Midwinter attendees be surprised to learn about you?

In the last 10 years, I’ve become a tennis fanatic. I’ll play anybody at any time at any place. (Don’t ask me to play pickleball though!)

What did you want to be when you grew up?

I started out as a pre-med major at North Park. That came to a quick end after a number of blunders during lab experiments.

What was your first job?

As a teenager, I worked at a golf course driving range taking $2.50 and handing golfers a bucket of balls. Surely that job has been replaced by AI by now.

What was the last song you sang along to?

I was in the right place at the right time and was fortunate to go to see U2 in the Sphere. The last song that I sang at the top of my lungs was “Where the Streets Have No Name” with 15,000 of my closest friends.

Watch the opening night of Midwinter 2023, which was led by Matt.
