This interview is part of our series on getting to know the speakers who will be at the Next Gen conference for children, youth, and young adult ministry leaders in January. We asked them some questions about this year’s theme, “Follow Me.”
Paula Dannielle is the lead pastor of Cohesion, a church plant in Charlotte, North Carolina. Having been in ministry for over 25 years, she is passionate about leadership development, empowering women leaders, and preaching and reconciliation. Paula is the proud mother of three young adults.
Where do you currently live?
Charlotte, North Carolina
Can you describe a pivotal moment when you responded to the call to follow Jesus?
When I was called to pastor in Charlotte. I did not want to leave Phoenix although my life was completely falling apart. I had been so hurt serving in church that I wanted to do anything but that. Following God to Charlotte was one of the healthiest things I did as a person, a parent, and a follower of Jesus.
How has your understanding of what it means to follow Jesus changed over time?
Following Jesus is not just for the big moments. Big moments often lead to small moments. Following Jesus is a daily decision that sometimes leads to what I want to do and sometimes it doesn’t. Following Jesus is not about achieving momentary happiness, it is about wholeness.
Who is the most interesting person you follow online (social media, blogs, podcasts, etc.), and why?
Can I change my mind later? LOL! This feels like a liability. For now, @phyliciadshea on IG. She does different cultural voices and works on preserving authenticity and honoring different peoples. PLUS, she loves Jesus and promotes following him! Love her!
